Join us on Wednesday 14th January for ‘Dereham’s Vestry Meetings 1837-1863’ with local historians Jo Bannister and Caroline Rawlings.

The Vestry or Vestry meetings were the main organ of local government from 1714 to the 1860s, so named because the gatherings were often held in the church vestry room after Sunday worship. Vestry meetings covered virtually anything that concerned the local community, from welfare provisions, the maintenance of roads, even law and order in the parish. For the first time since their recent transcription, this talk looks at what the Dereham Vestry minutes reveal about the town and local community in the mid-eighteenth century.
